Troy Tang
Flute Teacher
I teach and play flute around Auckland as well as from my home studio in Bucklands Beach, close to Macleans Primary. My students span all ages and abilities and are always getting better!

What I Do
I have studied with world-renowned teachers including Uwe Grodd (University of Auckland), Kathryn Moorhead (Elder Conservatorium), Robert Aitken (Hochschule for Musik Freiburg) and Keith Underwood (Mannes School of Music). I use what I've learned and a few tricks of my own to great success with young players of all levels. I focus on developing musicality and a solid technical command of the instrument, and make a point of bringing out each student's unique personality. My most marked successes are with beginners and students who find the flute physically challenging: my deep knowledge of the mechanics of the body as it relates to flute-playing allows me to diagnose and solve issues that can remain elusive otherwise.Students who work with me have been commended overseas including at the Australian Flute Festival and the Hong Kong International Flute Competition, and hold music scholarships at prestigious Auckland schools including St. Kentigern's College.
About Me
Growing up, I didn't have strong feelings about the flute. That all changed when I went back to Singapore to serve in the army. There I had the good fortune to play in a five-man classical ensemble with world-class young talents including Kong Xianlong (Singapore Symphony Orchestra), Mervyn Lee (Young Steinway Artist) and Gabriel Ng (Bach Prize, Menuhin Competition 2012). After seeing the dedication it took to play at a high level, my lifelong interest in teaching flute began. While I was born too late to study with them, my flute heroes (both through recordings and personal anecdotes from my own teachers) are Marcel Moyse and Jean-Pierre Rampal. I also have a deep appreciation for older instruments and own a beautiful Bonneville piccolo from the 1910s with a remarkable engraved head. My main instrument is an Altus plated flute with a J.R. Lafin silver headjoint. On the more academic side, I also hold a law degree, but I vastly prefer music.
